As a small independent furniture maker Darrell Peart can offer a degree of flexibility and an attention to detail not commonly found in larger shops. He routinely works with a client to adapt the Greene & Greene or Arts & Crafts styles to a more contemporary function. Darrell's influences as a furniture maker/designer have been many. It's within the Arts & Crafts Movement (Craftsman, Mission) that he feel at home though. The ideals of John Ruskin and William Morris have been an inspiration to him. The movements many designers (and craftsmen) such as Gustav Stickley, Harvey Ellis, CFA Voysey, and CR Mackintosh, have all played a part in Darrell's development. But it's the Pasadena architects, Charles and Henry Greene ( Greene and Greene) that have captivated him the most.
"The furniture from their Ultimate Bungalow period (Gamble, Thorsen, Pratt, and Blacker Houses) represents not only the best from the American Arts & Crafts Movement but also some of the most sensitive and thoughtful designs ever produced. Charles Greene's blending of the American Arts & Crafts style with Asian influences was nothing less than divine."

"I thoroughly enjoy and take great pride in my work. With attention to detail and reliance upon traditional joinery you can expect a piece of furniture I build to last generations."

"The Guru of Greene and Greene" ....The Robb Report Collection December 2005

"Darrell Peart finds satisfaction turning dreams into reality with his finely-crafted furniture that is worthy of Greene and Greene's finest Pasadena Bungalow's" Style 1900 Magazine Spring/Summer 2007

"The popularity of Arts & Crafts style furniture just seems to grow, as more and more designer-makers adapt its details to original works. Darrell Peart is an authority on those details......" Barb Siddiqui WoodCentral

"Darrell certainly has a strong fan base of both clients- who can wait as long a year for a piece- and woodworkers-who look to him for inspiration and instruction" Ronald J Goldman Woodworker West March-April 2006

"Darrell Peart's furniture is more obviously Greene & Greene, including reproductions. His Gamble dining table is a wonderful achievement." David Mathias (author of upcoming book on Greene and Greene furniture) blogging for Popular Woodworking Magazine

"Author and very accomplished furnituremaker Darrell Peart"...... Hewn and Hammer

"The ideals of the Arts & Crafts Movement support the work of individual craftsman designing and producing quality pieces in their own shops. Nowhere is this ideal more realized than with the work of Darrell Peart, Furnituremaker." ... Alexandria Arnold - Arts and Crafts Movement Review

Excerpt from Woodworkers Journal online interview--- October 2004

"That's what I really enjoy. Studying Greene and Greene in minute detail, writing the book has given me ideas for things I want to try. It's made me appreciate the genius of Charles Greene, but also makes me wonder where all his ideas came from. It's almost enough to give me an inferiority complex." ....Darrell Peart

"An inferiority complex? I don't think so; not with the caliber of work that Darrell Peart produces. "…...Michael Dresdner

Greene & Greene:
Design Elements for the Workshop

by Darrell Peart

Greene & Greene Book

Greene and Greene book back cover

Topics include:

  • Background on Charles and Henry Greene( who designed the furniture), and John and Peter Hall (who built the furniture).

  • A step-by-step workshop guide for creating numerous G&G design elements.

  • Examples of the Greene and Greene vocabulary in use by contemporary furniture makers.

It's the details that make a Greene and Greene piece special. My book will show you how to create those details in your own shop and how contemporary furniture maker/designers have integrated the G&G style into their work. The book will primarily appeal to woodworkers and designers, but offers points of interest for any (non woodworking) fan of Greene and Greene furniture as well.

Thorsen House
The Thorsen House is known as one of the "Ultimate Bungalows" of Greene & Greene, a rare architectural landmark of exceptional beauty and craftsmanship that has come to define the height of the American Arts & Crafts Movement. It is the only masterwork in the Greene's classic style in Northern California, and is one of only a few of its caliber in the world. It is listed on the National Register for Historic Places (1978) and the California Historic Register (1978) and is a Berkeley City Landmark (1975).

You can help with this important project. Donations are fully tax deductible. Please consider joining the effort to restore this architectural masterpiece. Visit the Thorsen House website today.
