About the Furniture

Joinery /Construction

As a result of the seasonal changes in humidity wood is endlessly moving: either contracting or expanding. Even after the finish is applied wood movement does not cease. Darrell's furniture is built with this fact in mind using time honored methods.
Darrell's work relies heavily upon traditional joinery which is often highlighted and used as an essential part of the design as was common with the original Arts & Crafts and Greene & Greene furniture
Although time honored methods of work are given special honor, more contemporary methods are employed when proven to be reliable and best for the given situation.

Hardwoods and Materials

In a well thought out design the grain plays a very important role. All material, whether solid hardwoods or veneers, are carefully chosen for color and grain match. Upon request we offer "sustained yield" or smart woods" when available.

Much of Darrell's work is in solid wood including solid wood tops for Desks and small tables. In situations such as large dining table tops where the "core" is captured, (extra thick) veneers are used. In instances like these veneers actually perform better. If a solid wood top were used it would eventually expand and contract, causing a break in the solid edging.

Hardware

Darrell often makes his own wooden hardware such as wooden table extensions. While involving much more labor, the shop made extensions operate with a smotth silky feel (waxed wood on wood) not achievable with store bought extensions.

Some modern hardware innovations on the other hand perform their job extremely well . A good case in point is full extension drawer slides. In situations where drawers must carry a lot of weight and fully extend, modern hardware performs admirably.

Finish

Darrell's finish is both beautiful and durable. The wood is first colored with and extremely fine ground (for clarity)pigmented stain . The topcoat is a very durable low sheen catalyzed lacquer. Finish samples are available upon request and custom finishes (to match existing woodwork) are welcome.
